• Classic house

  Walnut, red velvet, brass, warm lamps. The room as it is.

  An observatory: the ceiling opens to stars, planets drift overhead, cool blue lamps, a low engine hum.

  A derelict house: stained plaster, boarded windows, cobwebs, guttering lamps, fog on the stage, wind and creaks. No projector beam.

• Kids party

  Sky-blue walls, candy-pink panels, balloons and bunting up high, clouds drifting under the ceiling, a popcorn cart and a candy stand at the back, a music-box tune before the show.

• Under the sea

  A sunken hall: teal walls, shifting caustic light on the ceiling, schools of fish and rising bubbles overhead, kelp swaying by the walls, a deep-water hum.

• Neon arcade

  Retro-future: black walls edged in magenta and cyan neon, a glowing grid overhead, neon signs, a slow synth pulse. For sci-fi, action and music.

• Jungle night

  Deep green walls, vines and big leaves from the beams, fireflies drifting, tiki torches at the back, crickets and night birds. For adventure and nature.

  Nineteen-forties and nearly black and white: grey plaster, rain streaking tall windows, venetian-blind light on the walls, cigarette haze in the beam, rain and distant thunder. For mystery and crime.
